Security Camera Keeps Going Offline?
Offline cameras are a pattern-recognition problem. One camera versus all cameras, Wi-Fi versus wired, random versus same-time-every-day — each pattern points at a different culprit. Work the pattern before replacing hardware.
What The Pattern Means
- One Wi-Fi camera drops, others fine: weak signal or interference at that spot — same physics as a doorbell going offline.
- All cameras drop together: router, NVR, network switch, or the internet connection itself. Check our live provider status and whether other devices lost internet too.
- Drops at the same time daily: connection saturated at busy hours (see camera bandwidth math) or a scheduled router reboot/firmware task.
- Wired camera drops randomly: PoE power budget exceeded on the switch, a marginal cable run, or a failing port — not a Wi-Fi problem at all.
- App says offline but it records locally: internet path broken (provider, DNS, port forwarding) while the LAN is fine.
Before touching the camera: can your phone, standing next to it, load a speed test? If the phone struggles there too, fix coverage. If the phone is fine, look at power, the NVR, or IP conflicts.
Quick Fixes Checklist
- Reserve a fixed IP for each camera in the router (DHCP reservations) — cures “random” conflicts after reboots.
- Move 2.4 GHz cameras to a clean channel; keep them off congested bands.
- Add a mesh node near far cameras instead of cranking camera settings down.
- Count your PoE switch's power budget against camera draw — an overloaded switch drops ports under load.
- Update camera and NVR firmware; many “offline” bugs are firmware-side reconnect failures.
Map the weak spots first
Run the free WiFiCheckup test beside the router and at each camera location. The $9.99 report shows the rooms where signal actually fails and the cheapest fix path — before you buy extenders you might not need.
- Free room-by-room speed test
- $9.99 emailed fix report
- Coverage fixes, cheapest first
Cameras fail silently. Find out in minutes, not weeks.
Most businesses discover their cameras stopped recording only when they need the footage. WiFiCheckup Uptime watches your internet connection 24/7 from $9/mo — and we can add reachability checks on your camera system or NVR, with instant alerts and a monthly report. 14-day free trial, nothing to install.
